Nature Quest: Pond Life

Forest Fledgling: Frogs and Tadpoles

Jr. Naturalists: Planting Potatoes

Children, age 7 to 11, are invited to plant potato “eyes” in the garden at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Try out other gardening activities like the farmers who worked at Walney farm in the mid-1800s. A simple craft is included in the $5 fee. Children’s Workshop - Super Studio: Magical Mobiles
Time: 3:30pm - 5:00pm
This new hands-on art program has been designed for children who like to push the limits of their creativity. These no-holds-barred sessions with artist Marco Rando allow children to focus on three-dimensional projects using a variety of materials.
This workshop explores movement, balance, color, design and a variety of materials in the construction of a dreamlike mobile. Children must be 8-12 years old to participate. 12 children limit. Fee to participate.

From now until September 30, 2009 Sewn Together will be displayed at the Carlyle House. Worn by a 17-year-old girl to her 1747 wedding…restyled and re-worn again and again until, finally, cut into dozens of pieces and given to that young girl’s descendants. Come learn the story of a dress and the women who wore it. From March-October, 2009, Carlyle House will focus its interpretation on the women who lived there. The highlight of the exhibit will be the recreated 1747 wedding dress of Sarah Fairfax Carlyle and the 1795 dress made by her daughter, Sarah Carlyle Herbert.

From now until May 15th, Cassini spacecraft has provided an unprecedented look at Saturn and its rings and moons since its arrival in the planet’s orbit in 2004. The images and other data returned by Cassini and its Titan probe Huygens have revealed surprising details in Saturn’s atmospheric storms, the structure of its rings, the intricate geologic patterns on its moons and even present-day geologic activity on the moon Enceladus. This exhibit consists of more than 60 views of the Saturn system ranging from sober grayscale to bright vibrant colors.

Fauquier County's 250th Anniversary ~ The Official Celebration!

Throughout the day on Friday, May 1st all are invited to spend a day in history!
From 9am to 9pm, we celebrate the vast and fascinating history of Fauquier County.
Guests will enjoy entertainment provided by living historians, demonstrations,
performances, contests, activities, lectures, Kid’s Corner, live music, and more.

Willard Scott will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the featured historical parade at10am. Congressman Frank Wolf will serve as Grand Marshall. Guests will enjoy a
variety of entertainment from 11:30am to 1:30pm when the Commemorative Ceremony
will be held on the steps of the County’s historic courthouse.

At 3:00pm the 250th commemorative monument will be unveiled and its time capsule
sealed for the next 50 years. Cedar Run Garden Club will host a "History is our Heritage"flower show from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Three historical homes on Culpeper Street will beopen to the public free of charge.

The entertainment continues at 3:30pm and into the evening with the 250th First FridayWine Walk on Main Street from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Here, on the eve of Virginia Gold Cup,Fauquier wineries will offer wine tastings and sales, agricultural businesses will offerlocally made foods and fresh grown produce, stores and restaurants will be open,guests will enjoy live music, and more.

From now until September 30, 2009 Sewn Together will be displayed at the Carlyle House. Worn by a 17-year-old girl to her 1747 wedding…restyled and re-worn again and again until, finally, cut into dozens of pieces and given to that young girl’s descendants. Come learn the story of a dress and the women who wore it. From March-October, 2009, Carlyle House will focus its interpretation on the women who lived there. The highlight of the exhibit will be the recreated 1747 wedding dress of Sarah Fairfax Carlyle and the 1795 dress made by her daughter, Sarah Carlyle Herbert.

21st Annual Loudoun Arbor Day Celebration
Admission: Free

Arbor Day is organized by the Loudoun Arbor Day Committee to help educate children and adults about the benefits and importance of trees and to encourage tree planting. This year's celebration of trees includes a parade, formal ceremony, exhibits and demonstrations highlighting the numerous uses and benefits of trees, tree climbing with Arbor Artists, and educational opportunities like proper pruning techniques. Food and refreshments will be for sale and discounted tour tickets for the historic Oatlands mansion will be available for purchase. Otherwise, everything is free including tree seedlings being given away by the Virginia Department of Forestry and Loudoun Soil & Water Conservation District. Home Depot will conduct a “Kids Workshop” and provide free materials for children to build birdhouses. There will also be an opportunity to participate in costume making prior to the parade with free materials.

Treasure Hunt for Kids
Admission: Registration needed. $5 (includes bottled water, name badge, bandana, pouch, notepad.
Time: Two times (9:30am and 1:30pm)
Location: Smithsonian Air Space Museum DC
The current treasure hunts is geared toward elementary students. This hunt is expected to be fun and educational. In order to solve the clue, the children will be involved in creating replicas, building paper airplanes, and more. Some of the clues will have secret codes attached to them, to help decipher the final message to the treasure. Parents must remain with their children at all times. The children will be given a pouch,pen,a bandanna, and an envelop with educational clues in them. Each clue will lead the children closer to the treasure. The first group to decipher the message, and find the treasure wins a special prize(Toys R us gift certificate). Second group to win gets a semi-special prize. Please come join us for a Pokemon morning of fun. All kids in first grade and up are welcome to come for playing or for watching. You will have a chance to collect and trade cards.
